Everything we have discussed to this point has concerned itself with events and processes. It should, then, not be surprising that the events and processes themselves have governing principles, or laws. Events are governed by the Law of Three, processes by the Law of Seven, or Octaves. These are fundamental cosmic laws that are said to operate at every level of existence. Our concern, however, in this chapter, is how they operate in us.
It is my intent here to discuss these laws strictly from a personal experience perspective. Most discussions of these laws are fraught with intellect and theory, and give little example of how these laws operate in ordinary life. Yet, a practical understanding of their operation within us is essential for the expansion of our awareness.
Every event requires three forces in order to occur. There is a positive or active force, a negative or passive force, and a neutral or reconciling force, also known as first, second and third force respectively. We must see this in the simplest circumstances of life. Picture yourself lying abed at dawn. Your intellectual centre is saying to you, "It's time to get up!". Your instinctive centre is resisting, "Just ten more minutes." This tug-of-war may go on for some time with nothing happening. You feel paralyzed, experiencing the push and pull between the active, first, force and the denying, second, force. Suddenly you glimpse the time and realize you will be late for work. The emotional centre interjects, "Ohmygod, I'm late for work." You leap out of bed, propelled into action. A third or reconciling force has entered.
A friend of mine recently visited and parked his car in a private parking lot. Upon preparing to depart he noticed that a tow truck had arrived and had elevated the front of his car in preparation for removing it. Insensed, he rushed out to the lot and began demanding that the driver lower his car, first force, his desire. The driver refused, citing how the rules had been broken and he was just doing his job. Second force, or resistance. They argued back and forth. At a pause in the heated debate, I interjected that perhaps the driver would be willing to do us a favor for which he would recieve a ten dollar bill. His whole attitude changed, the car was lowered, the dispute ended. Reconciliation, or third force had entered.
First force can be seen as desire, Second force as resistance to that desire. These are readily apparent to us in the play of life. We do not, however, so readily perceive the existence of the Third force. It is said we are Third force blind. It is an aspect of our sleep, our existence in the realm of duality, that we are unaware of Third force. How much of our Unnecessary Suffering is the result of this blindness?
In the second state of consciousness, waking sleep, we are incapable of thinking beyond duality. We engage almost completely in formatory thinking. Remember, this term denotes our tendency to think in two's, yes and no, left or right, this way or that. It also is refering to our inability to see beyond form to grasp the substance the form contains. So we become stuck it what seems to be irreconcilable contradictions. We are constantly engaged in the struggle between yes and no and fail to perceive the third alternative that has the power to solve the dilemma.
Also, notice in the examples given above that the third force was an emotion. In the first example, the intellect was first force, the body was second force, and the fear of being late to work was the third force. So in this example we are driven into action by a negative emotion. The next logical question to ask is how much of our actions have motivating forces of this nature. How often are we propelled into action at the behest of a negative emotion?
